The cake is an icon of celebration, a ritual to mark significant moments, a record of time passing. The making of a cake is a domestic craft rendered with affection and created to be an ephemeral experience – once consumed, its function as marker disappears in the physical sense and exists only as a remnant of an instance.
In the 'Sorry All Over the Place' series, the form of the cake becomes a conceptual device for cataloguing the personal and intimate. Using an array of evocative, unusual and mostly inedible ‘found’ materials, the process of making becomes about collecting; about preserving and halting the onset of decay in the exercise of observance.
The exhibition will also feature a full-scale ceiling installation made of popcorn ("The Infestation"). Because you can’t have a party with just cake.
